The negotiation about the Greek crisis has clearly shown everyone that the EU is not the Union of States, Minds, Hearts and People that our grandfathers wished for after two wars. Instead, the EU is just a club which allows poor people to be left in poorness and allows rich people to walk away, turn their heads and ignore the problem.
This is not
what we wish for in Europe, this is not what we want for Europe, this is not
the European Union we want to support or live in.
We don’t
want a Europe where people’s lives are sacrificed due to some economic laws. We
don’t want a Europe where people are hungry and freeze to death. We don’t want
a Europe in which every day a humanitarian crisis consistently goes unnoticed,
all while we keep calling ourselves “the land of freedom, equality,
brotherhood”.
In 2013,
122.6 million people(24.5% of the population) in the EU were at risk of poverty
or social exclusion (source: http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/2995521/6035076/3-04112014-BP-EN.pdf/62f94e70-e43a-471f-a466-2e84d1029860) with the highest levels of risk
in:
Bulgaria (48%)
Romania (40,4%)
Greece (35,7%)
Latvia (35,1%)
Hungary (33,5%)
As
Europeans, we can’t allow it. As Europeans, we call for an immediate CHANGE OF
POLICY. We call for a Europe of justice and equality. We call for aid in development efforts for all the European
countries, and we must not allow any economic law, policy or measure that
forces people into poverty which brings additional instability into our region.
We don’t want anyone to be forced to leave the Union because of poverty. We don't want populations to be driven into poverty and starve to
death because in order to remain in the union they are forced to follow the
EU's austerity measures. We fear that continuous support for these
detrimental policies will only destabilize
the Union, leading to an end of our European dream of peace.
We think
that Europe can change-that’s why we ask it to change.
We love
Europe and the ideals behind it. But most importantly, we TRUST in Europe.
